“I’m aware of the protest and I respect their First Amendment right to do so.  We live in the greatest country in the world but there are significant challenges facing our state.  That’s why I’m focused on improving public safety in our state. My position hasn’t changed.  If you are here illegally and you commit a crime, you should be deported. If someone opposes this stance, they are disregarding the rule of law and putting our citizens at risk.” – Rhode Island Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz (District 23) (Responding to an inquiry from CoalitionNews Reporter Pat Ford)

Late Edit: Jason Roias has responded to the Senator de la Cruz Statement:

Senator de la Cruz claims this is about crime, yet Trump’s team is making it clear that just being in the country illegally makes you a criminal in their eyes—which is not even current federal law. But beyond the legal and political implications, there’s a moral one: De La Cruz presents herself as a Christian, yet she is actively calling for widespread raids that will tear families apart and punish people who have committed no violent act. Where in the teachings of Christ does it say to round up the vulnerable instead of welcoming the stranger? The hypocrisy is glaring.

Article:

Tensions within both the Rhode Island Senate, and the larger Rhode Island political community have heightened considerably, as opponents of President Donald Trump, have looked askance at a tweet by Senator de la Cruz … seemingly requesting an enhanced ICE presence in the Capital City, followed by a resolution memorializing the President’s Election.

In response, a wide range of Rhode Island politicians and activists have objected to Senator de la Cruz conducting a fundraiser in Providence, culminating in a planned protest outside of Ladder 133, the site of the event, next Tuesday, February 4th, at 5:30PM. The Coalition Radio Network will be onsite to report. Of interest? In the event of a “Picket Line”, which Rhode Island Pols will cross to attend?

The Coalition has reached out to a number of political leaders to gauge their response to the controversy. What. Say. You?
