Vartan Gregorian Elementary School Principal Named 2025 Outstanding First Year Principal by Rhode Island Association of School Principals

Vartan Gregorian Principal Matthew Brown was recognized as Outstanding First Year Principal Award by the Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP) today at Vartan Gregorian Elementary School. Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green, Rhode Island House Majority Leader Christopher R. Blazejewski, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, and Providence City Councilman John Goncalves joined Providence Public Schools Superintendent Javier Montañez and Robert E. Littlefield, RIASP Executive Director, to make the surprise announcement to Principal Brown and the Vartan Gregorian school community.
“Having one of Providence’s new school leaders recognized by principals from across the state is a significant milestone,” said Commissioner Infante-Green. “It is a testament to the supports that Providence Public Schools has to grow its emerging talent and help lead them on a path to success. I join students, staff, alumni, and loved ones in congratulating Principal Brown on this honor and wishing him continued success within our turnaround District.”
“There is no doubt that Principal Brown is making a positive impact on students and preparing them for future success,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “On behalf of our entire city, I congratulate Principal Brown and look forward to his continued success in the Providence community.”
“As a Vartan Gregorian alumni, I am so proud to be here today to recognize Principal Brown for his impact on this community and its students,” said Providence City Council Senior Deputy Majority Leader John Goncalves. “Educators like Matt Brown and schools like Vartan Gregorian are leading our city’s students toward the future they deserve, and City Council will continue to support them however we can.”
“Principal Brown goes above and beyond each day to ensure that Vartan Gregorian’s Smart Foxes receive a top rate education,“ said Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez. “His school’s consistent progress on test performance has shown that his efforts are working. When he started, I encouraged him to do his very best. He has exceeded my expectations and has become a beloved member of the Vartan Gregorian and PPSD community.”
Principal Brown has worked in education for ten years, the last four in the Providence Public School District (PPSD). Before becoming a Principal, he served as an Assistant Principal for two years at Bailey Elementary School, and did one year as Principal in Training/Director of Student Support Services.
Matthew earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He then received his Master’s degree in Education and Urban Teaching from Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, and completed the Principal Certification Program through the CLEE Principal Residency Network.
